Tourism, An Economic Driver for the Entire Region
Northeast Ohio has a collection of large cities that draw visitors. Yet, in between these larger urban areas., there are nearly 150 towns with populations of between 10,000 and 2,000 that are the sought after experiences that visitors want today. These locations represent an enormous opportunity to attract more visitors not only from Cleveland, but also from the collection of other large metropolitan areas surrounding the region, including Pittsburgh, Columbus, Detroit and others.

Brief Bio
In a recent book 480 page book, now available on Amazon, TOURISM: Economic Development for Any Size Community, Dr. Maree Forbes Gaughan lays out an uncomplicated process that every city and town can implement to increase visitors who deliver a higher level of economic development. Every city, town and community has heritage, which is unique to each area, as the place to begin telling their story.
Maree’s decades long experience in the tourism industry has included working in or with every part of the industry except for the airlines. She served as a Professor of Destination Management and Marketing at Temple University for eight years, teaching Master’s Level students about destinations. Prior to that, she managed an inbound tour operators for nine years, bringing in visitors from 20 countries around the world to explore the US in detail. She founded National Travel Center, now with a team of 10, a decade ago to do something meaningful in the tourism industry. Today, the organization is assisting small cities, small towns, rural communities, and scenic byways to expand their tourism, increase their visitors and deliver increased economic development that works to increase quality of life.
Dr. Forbes Gaughan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin, Masters in Art, Architectural History and Preservation from UW, a mostly complete MBA from Taft University, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Planning from The Union, plus certificates in digital marketing and advertising, strategic leadership, management consulting and more.
